Roxbury is a narrow valley town with an outsized cultural footprint — a well-kept village green, a summer arts calendar, and a landscape that shaped the writer John Burroughs, who was born here and is buried above the village.

What it’s like

The village runs along the East Branch headwaters, with Kirkside Park at its center and hills climbing steeply on both sides. It’s tidy and deliberate in a way that not every small town is, largely thanks to sustained local investment over many years.

Outside the village, the roads climb quickly into farmland and forest. Dark skies are genuinely good here — enough that stargazing is a real reason people buy.

Practical things to know

The valley is narrow, which means buildable flat ground is limited and much of what’s available sits on a slope. Slope affects driveway maintenance, septic design, and how much sun a house gets in winter.

Expect wells and septic outside the village center, and watershed rules near the streams. On older properties, ask whether the septic has ever been replaced rather than just pumped.
